This is a great app, but the latest version (3.8) is not compatible with Monterey. The exported movie gets deleted as soon it finished the process.
Hope this gets resolved asap.
I was seeking a way to embed captions in a video for users and students that are hearing impaired. Many of the places we securely post instructional videos still do not allow for the use of a VTT, TTML or SRT file. Obviosuly, it's ideal to use a file, since it also provides the ability to assist the visually imparied. Sadly, some tools still do not allow for it. In these cases, having the ability to embed the caption in the video itself is incredibly helpful. When using an MP4 and importing a VTT formatted file, it works flawlessly. The exporting fucntion as included has virtually all of the formats we need and can use. I would caution folks to be sure they have properly formatted files. Having files that have flaws (which is common if you have to do it manually) can cause issues no matter what tool you use.
I am a frequent user of Submerge 3. Loved it because it would allow you to customize the font used for subtitling (the company I work for has its own proprietary font). However, after updating to Monterrey I tried to embed subtitles and app would generate, but last 5 percent would simply stop and mark as complete, and video would disappear from the folder it was being created in. Followed developer's suggestion to update since this provided fix and still no luck.
Contacted developer via their support page 3 days ago and no response, which is unusual from Apple Developers. If this works it's awesome, if not then useless. Hopefully developer will update once more (or reply to their support requests) ASAP.
I use MacOS Monterrey (12.4) and this worked well for me. More importantly, because it hardcodes the subtitles, it works for online courses in Canvas LMS. Canvas has a nasty habit of stripping softcoded subtitles out. It has its own system for softcoding subtitles, but that system is flaky and in my experience, unreliable. Submerge at this point seems entirely reliable and allows for controlling the size of the subtitles, which is great. No complaints so far.
At first the program did not recognize a .srt file that contained the subtitles, However; I was able to manually direct it to do so… although this was a little confusing at first. I read on the web that the program was “fast” and would take only a “couple of minutes.” Maybe if the video was three seconds long it might take on a “couple of minutes.” But, the movie that I was exporting reported that it would take 2 and 1/2 hours to export. What a waste of money. Avoid. There are free programs out, like Subler, that you can quickly add an .srt file or other subtitle and save the movie… then just turn on subtitles in your app and voila!
This software is easy to use and works well. I've noticed a few bugs, e.g. subtitle previews fall out of sync when updating subtitle settings during playback. But besides that, this software works for 90% of my needs with little fuss. I'm super happy with this product.
An important program for your foreign movie viewing arsenal.
This program does everything I need it to. Sometimes it is necessary to visually burn subtitles into the picture. For example if you want to view a film from a player with a thumb drive, the subtitle track cannot be actuated. By burning the subtitles into the frame, you can always be sure they will be there, regardless of how or on what you are viewing the program.
Who said that a subtitle had to be at the bottom of the picture? They are easier to read when they are at the top. (I guess you’ll need to call it a “supertitle”) When viewing, your eyes don’t have to jump up and down as much. This program allows you to put the subtitles anywhere you want.
What was especially helpful was I personally contacted the developer and he was always eager to help — answering me in less than a day.
Hands down, the easiest and most intuitive way to hardcode subtitles that I’ve found (and I’ve been searching for a while). I have a media player that won’t add subtitles when I use my big screen TV so in order to watch subtitled movies on anything other than my computer I needed a way to incorporate them into the original file. This app does all the work. There’s even a free optional app, Submarine, that scours the internet looking for the subtitles fo you. I’ve used it on 10 foreign films so far and have yet to have a problem. I love this app and highly recommend it!!
I bought Submerge3 + ProRes export. It works great. I had tried a lot of softwares before. Now I think I finally found what I need. Very easy to use. It supports ProRes and Mpeg-2 export which costs a little extra $ but definitely it's worth to pay for someone who needs it like me. Only thing I am dissapointed a little is that I cannot choose “outline” font style of subtitles. Hope the author could consider it in the next update. Keep up great work. Thank you!
I do many events to rase money for 2 charities and this program has been the best thing since Final Cut Pro to help us get our message across. I tried a new subtitles burn-in apps, and by far this one is the best. Very easy to use and with the most powerful features. Very easy to customize.
Since we work in Nepal and the accents there are not clear and we need subtitles and this program has made it possible.

I purchased this application expecting it to be a solid way to burn subtitles into movie files. It does that amazingly well. WIth a ton of options and flexibility, I can create transcoded movies with subittiles that work on all my TVs and portable devices. The developer is also responsive to feedback and questions, so I can’t imagine how I could ask for a better purchase. Worth every penny.
It takes a minute to hardcode a minute long video— so a 2 hour video would take 2 hours. plain and simple. This program is great, I had issues with Thai and Chinese descenders and ascenders not displaying in Submerge 2 but when I reached out to customer service they responded immedietly, sent over a beta version to test that, and now Submerge 3 is out. 5 out of 5!
I must say that your application is by far the most efficient, user friendly app for hardcoding subtitles I have found yet.
I have been using and experimenting with many others over the years and really for me there’s no comparison, yet :)

I’ve been using Submerge 2, but 3 has more built-in functions. It’s easy to use, and works exactly as described. I’m relatively new to MACs (after 32 years of PCs) and had a couple of questions — customer service was outstanding!!! I highly recommend this app!!
Great Application. Does the job so well. Rendering of subtitles is wonderful. I wish I knew about it earlier. Would have saved me a lot of time. Keep the good work.
The app is almost useless. It practically takes the length of the movie to add the subtitles to it. I just finished adding subtitles to a 1,5 hour long movie in exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes. Plus the app drains the life out of your batteries, makes your computer noisy and heats it up too. It would almost be just as efficient to add subtitles in VLC and record the screen itself.
Without the crashes, i’d give Submerge 5 stars. When it doesn’t crash it’s just perfect. But the thing is after adding subs it crashes 9 out of 10 times I navigate the cursor through the timeline to check for sync issues. Updates never fixed this. Too bad.
advertises batch features but they’re undocumented and seem useless
You can’t do any useful type of batch export using this tool. Also, reached out to their customer support multiple times regarding batch features and have had no response for over a week.
